In an era when the fight against gender-based violence is more critical than ever, the Stars of Poverty Rescue Foundation (SPRF) in Tanzania is leading the charge with innovative community initiatives. Through its AWARE 2020 project, SPRF has brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from the Ikungi District in Singida to address and combat the scourge of gender-based violence head-on. Held on August 20, 2020, this event united judges, community development officers, police investigators, gender committee members, and local women’s advocates from both current and previous project villages. The initiative not only highlights SPRF’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations but also reinforces its mission to transform poverty relief into a holistic, community-driven movement.

Uniting for Change

The AWARE 2020 project is a cornerstone of SPRF’s broader strategy to empower marginalized and underprivileged communities in Tanzania. Under the banner “Shirika la Jiokoe na Umaskini,” which translates to the Union of Poverty Rescue, the project aimed to bring together key players who are actively working to end gender-based violence. The event was held at a central location within the Ikungi District, drawing participants from four project villages—Siuyu and Unyankhanya from the Siuyu ward, and Munkinya and Damankia from the Dung’unyi ward—as well as from eight villages involved in earlier phases of the project, including Mungaa and Unyaghumpi from Mungaa ward, Puma and Nkuninkana from Puma ward, Kituntu and Utaho B from Kituntu ward, and Kipumbwiko and additional areas from Dung’unyi ward.

By assembling such a diverse group of stakeholders, SPRF ensured that the conversation was comprehensive, covering all aspects of gender-based violence—from its root causes to its far-reaching impacts on communities. The event provided a unique forum where legal professionals, educators, community leaders, and advocates could share their insights and experiences, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the challenges at hand.

A Platform for Constructive Dialogue

During the event, the primary focus was on discussing the pressing issues related to gender-based violence, particularly in the context of harmful practices that have long been part of the cultural fabric in some communities. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions about the challenges faced by women, girls, and vulnerable groups, and explored strategies for ensuring that their rights are upheld.

SPRF’s AWARE 2020 initiative emphasized two main themes: protection of women and girls from abuse and the urgent need for systemic change in the way cases of gender-based violence are handled. The discussions were framed around practical solutions that would not only reduce the incidence of violence but also empower victims and survivors to seek justice.

A key point raised during the roundtable was the recurring problem of delayed or insufficient legal action. Judges and police representatives highlighted that many cases of sexual violence and abuse often fail in court due to a lack of sufficient evidence and the reluctance of complainants to testify. For instance, Judge George Francis from the Ikungi Primary Court and Resident Judge Frida Shaidi from Mungaa ward noted that cases of rape frequently falter in the judicial process when complainants are unable or unwilling to present evidence. This challenge was compounded by cultural factors and the tendency for disputes to be settled informally at the community level, which often results in a lack of accountability for perpetrators.

Voices from the Frontline

The event also featured powerful testimonies from students and community advocates who are directly impacted by gender-based violence. A student from Munkinya Secondary School recounted how the training provided during the event enabled them to educate their peers and community members on the importance of reporting abuse. Another student from Siuyu Secondary School expressed newfound confidence and determination, explaining that the practical sessions not only equipped them with vital skills but also inspired them to take immediate action in their communities.

The active involvement of the students was further evidenced by the dynamic discussions held during the session, where they shared experiences and proposed actionable solutions. For many, the event was a turning point—a moment of awakening that reinforced their commitment to fighting gender-based violence and championing the rights of women and girls.

The Role of SPRF and Its Partners

SPRF’s commitment to this cause is further underscored by its strategic partnerships and collaborations. The AWARE 2020 project is implemented under the sponsorship of the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS), which has been instrumental in supporting SPRF’s initiatives across five wards of the Ikungi District. Under the guidance of SPRF’s Project Coordinator, Teacher Bernard Maira, the organization has been actively involved in advocating for women’s and girls’ rights. Maira emphasized that their current focus is to maintain the momentum generated by the strategic meeting and ensure that the project continues to move forward throughout 2020 and beyond.

The event also brought together key figures from various sectors, including community development officers, police from the Investigation Department, and members of the Gender Committee. These representatives played a crucial role in discussing the systemic issues affecting the prosecution of gender-based violence cases. Officers like Athmani Makoba from the local police and Dalahile Mahende from the Gender Committee highlighted that one of the significant challenges is that complainants often fail to appear in court, which leads to the acquittal of offenders. This issue, they explained, undermines efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and diminishes public trust in the justice system.

Moreover, local women advocates, who work at the grassroots level to mobilize communities against abusive practices, provided firsthand accounts of the challenges and successes they have encountered. Their efforts have been pivotal in creating awareness and fostering a culture of zero tolerance towards gender-based violence.

Impact on Education and Empowerment

One of the most inspiring aspects of the AWARE 2020 project was its focus on education and empowerment. By engaging students from various secondary and vocational schools, SPRF not only raised awareness about gender-based violence but also empowered the next generation to be proactive advocates for their rights. The establishment of Student Voice Clubs (SVCs) played a vital role in this process. These clubs serve as platforms where students can discuss critical issues, share ideas, and strategize on how to combat harmful practices within their communities.

The training sessions provided as part of the project equipped students with the skills needed to disseminate information and mobilize action. One student, after participating in the workshops, explained how the knowledge gained enabled them to educate others in their community and report incidents effectively. This empowerment is a key element of SPRF’s mission: transforming knowledge into action and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to contribute to a safer, more equitable society.

Recognition and Rewards

In addition to the educational and advocacy components, the AWARE 2020 event also included an award ceremony that recognized outstanding contributions. Certificates were distributed to all participating students, and each school was allowed to select a prize from the ICT treasure box. The main prize was awarded to Ndejje Secondary School for their creative and innovative websites, while Makulubita Seed Secondary School and Mpigi Secondary School received used laptops in recognition of their excellence in graphics and KOLIBRI projects.

Furthermore, 20 students and teachers from Ndejje, Luteete, and Luweero Secondary Schools were selected to attend WordPressCamp Jinja 2024—a flagship event that promises to broaden their horizons and expose them to global best practices in web design and development. A standout moment was the awarding of a trophy to Anna Selemani from Siuyu Secondary School for her exceptional performance, symbolizing the promise and potential of youth-driven change.

A Call to Action: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Abuse

The AWARE 2020 project is more than just an event—it is a movement that challenges traditional practices and advocates for a future where every individual, especially women and girls, can thrive. SPRF’s comprehensive approach to addressing gender-based violence through education, advocacy, and community mobilization has set the stage for long-term change.

Despite the challenges posed by harmful traditional practices such as early marriage, female genital mutilation, and domestic violence, SPRF remains committed to creating an environment where wealth creation and empowerment are part of everyday life. By addressing these deep-rooted issues through strategic initiatives and partnerships, SPRF is turning the tide against abuse and paving the way for a brighter, more equitable future.

The Road Ahead

Looking forward, SPRF plans to build on the successes of AWARE 2020. The organization aims to accelerate its efforts by expanding training programs, strengthening community engagement, and advocating for policy changes that protect the rights of women, children, and other vulnerable groups. One of the key goals for the next phase is to ensure that graduates of the program have sustainable pathways to success—transforming their newfound skills and confidence into opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Moreover, SPRF intends to further integrate technology and innovation into its programs, making use of digital platforms to extend its reach and impact. Initiatives such as virtual training sessions, online awareness campaigns, and interactive community forums will enable SPRF to connect with a broader audience and drive lasting change across Tanzania.
